The Classification of High-Risk AI Systems Under the EU Artificial Intelligence Act

On 21 May 2024, the Council of the European Union approved the Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council laying down harmonised rules on artificial intelligence and amending certain Union Legislative Acts (AIA), taking a final step in the legislative process. The AIA is the world’s first binding set of rules to mitigate risks arising out of use of artificial intelligence systems (AI systems). The regulation is a central block in the Union’s digital architecture which involves both a staged overhaul of existing legislation as well as the adoption of new laws, all aimed at ensuring that the Old Continent remains competitive in the new technological era, as well as placing it at the forefront of global regulatory policy.
